Do you realize the impact of your kindness? Are you aware that a loving smile may turn somebody's crappy day into one of hope and inspiration? Do you know you have the power to turn any situation around? And finally, is there anything better than knowing you've been a light in someone's life?
My 85 year old mother recently fell and broke her ankle. Already only slightly ambulatory with the help of a walker poor thing is now basically immobile and miserable unable to do anything for herself including bathroom needs.
I've been spending a lot of time with her, trying to give my 86 year old dad a break from the constant care needed.
The greatest lesson learned is how the little things are really the big things in life. So many of us search and struggle to find our purpose and how we can make a tremendous difference in the world - myself included. When in reality, the most gracious gift you can give to the world is to offer loving assistance and kindness to those in need - those that are right in front of your face. What I learned is it doesn't have to be on a grand scale - it starts with me,now, and how I interact with others.
Walking into my parents home can be like walking into a hornets nest - my mom suffers from dementia so we never know what her mood will be like but she is often unhappy as she used to be an active woman and in control of her life - that has all changed and is difficult for her to accept.
I discovered I can change the atmosphere by showing love no matter what her mood and suddenly she will smile and a loving light will shine from her eyes. It makes my heart sing to know I have been successful iin flipping her pain to joy. As the mood shifts in the house I realize this is a microcosm of the universe - and it all starts so small and so easily with each one of us....
