After a devastating end to my marriage I realized I had changed considerably over the span of my 13-year relationship. I had taken on the masculine role and realized I had lost touch with my feminine side. I needed a total transformation, so the first thing I did was step out of my husband's boots and back into my red high heels. If you find yourself in a similar situation read on - you will benefit from the action steps I took for a brand new you!
Tip #1
Enlist a friend from your inner circle to give it to you straight without any sugar coating...
It was Jon, my lifelong friend, who was the most honest and helpful. He began by telling me I dressed like a man… citing my last gift from my husband – the infamous Prada “tire” shoe as case in point and feminine travesty. He then addressed my cool, independent veneer that screamed “ I can take care of myself, thank you very much” and it’s intimidation factor. Ouch and W.O.W. – did I ever need to “fem-up” fast.
Needless to say I went out the next day with a mission- to buy a whole new wardrobe suitable for a starring role in Sex and the City – body hugging tops, skirts with slits, sexy high heels, and fabulous accessories. I was deliriously happy with my new look…albeit only in a dressing room or the comfort of my home. When reality set in, the awareness that I actually had to wear these get-up’s in public, I began to sweat. Now I had the look, but I was a fish out of water –come on, I was the Ann Taylor girl – button up blouses, trousers and a loafer – how was I ever going to pull this off?
Uncomfortable with this new look I gathered my friends to tell me the truth… I started hosting my own home fashion shows…their enthusiastic approval gave me the courage to venture out. I slowly gained the confidence to own my new “womanly” look and began feeling really good about my new image.
If it hadn't been for Jon's honesty I would not have been able to make the leap so quickly but I trusted him and what he said hit me at gut level so I knew it was right.
So do yourself a favor and ask a friend for help. If money is not an issue and you would prefer to turn to a professional seek out an image consultant. I can recommend a source here in Los Angeles, Lori Robinson, www.larconsultants.com. I've worked with her myself and she's very talented.
Whatever you decide know that there is a beautiful new you just waiting to be unleashed - get excited!!
